2017 was a hot, dry summer in the Northern Rhone, and plenty of producers made big wines. The Levets made a Levet wine. In Ampuis they still work traditionally - old Serine vines on the schist of the Cote Brune, whole-cluster fermentation, long aging in large oak and demi-muids, only 10-15% of them new - and that framework keeps even a ripe vintage honest. The 2017 Chavaroche is denser and darker-fruited than the cool years, with more flesh on the bone, but the savory core is fully intact: olive, black pepper, smoked meat, a streak of iron. It has the stuffing to keep going for years. Give it an hour in a decanter.
