The Story

A desert in the middle of Patagonia is one of the last places you'd expect to find thrilling Chardonnay, and yet here we are. Piero Incisa della Rocchetta, of the family behind Sassicaia, farms his Rio Negro estate organically and biodynamically, and for the whites he collaborates with none other than Burgundy's Jean-Marc Roulot. The fruit comes off sandy, mineral-rich soils full of river rocks and limestone, and the wine sees a mix of concrete, steel, and seasoned French oak with no malolactic to preserve its cut. The result splits the difference between Old World restraint and New World brightness: precise, saline, and floral, with a mineral, almost iodine-tinged finish. Cool-climate Chardonnay from a genuinely singular place.
