The name means fifty-five, for the year these ungrafted Pinot Noir vines were planted: 1955. That's serious old-vine pedigree anywhere, let alone in the Patagonian desert of Rio Negro, where Piero Incisa della Rocchetta farms Chacra biodynamically. The fruit grows on a sea of riverbed pebbles, and the wine is fermented whole-cluster with native yeasts at low temperatures, then aged in a roughly even split of concrete and neutral oak before bottling unfiltered. Of all the Chacra reds this is the most taut and tightly wound, all dried strawberry, crushed cherry, and iodine over a smoky, savory, mineral base. Elegant, energetic Pinot from the end of the world.
