This is the whisky Scotland actually keeps on the shelf. Famous Grouse has been blended in Perth since 1896, and its reliability is the entire point. Malt whisky from the Edrington stable, Highland Park and Macallan among them, is married with grain whisky and given time in oak to knit together into something soft, honeyed and lightly smoky, with no rough edges and absolutely no pretension. Drink it neat, drink it over a big cube, or build it into a highball with soda and a lemon twist. It also makes a quietly excellent Rob Roy, which is not a sentence you get to write about many blends at this level.
