2016 is the Barolo vintage people will still be arguing about decades from now — in the best possible way. Brunate is one of the great crus, a south- and southeast-facing amphitheater straddling La Morra and Barolo at 250–350 meters, on limestone-clay soils with a sandy streak that lends perfume rather than brawn. Francesco Rinaldi & Figli is an old-guard house and makes it the old-guard way: a long maceration in stainless, then at least three years resting in 5,000-liter Slavonian oak casks, which season the wine without ever tasting like oak. The result is classically built Nebbiolo — rose and tar, sour cherry, dried herbs and sweet tobacco — wrapped around the fine, insistent tannins that make Barolo Barolo. It's approachable enough now to enjoy with a long decant and a serious meal, and structured enough to reward another decade in the cellar. This is Barolo without shortcuts.
