René Rostaing's Ampodium (formerly the Cuvée Classique) is his estate Syrah, blended from many parcels throughout the appellation and aged in mostly older barrels with just a touch of new oak, so the wine speaks of place; Ampodium is the old Provençal name for the village of Ampuis. The 2011 was a cooler, fresher Northern Rhône vintage that favored finesse and perfume over power, which plays right into Rostaing's elegant house style. With well over a decade of age, it has softened into a savory, floral, harmonious wine. A graceful introduction to mature Côte-Rôtie.
