Most Champagne producers will happily talk your ear off about Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, then quietly skip past Meunier. Domaine Lagille builds on it. The family has farmed at Treslon, in the VallĂ©e de l'Ardre west of Reims, since 1818, and Meunier accounts for more than half of their seven-odd hectares. Grande RĂ©serve is the only blended wine in the estate's core range â the parcel cuvĂ©es alongside it are each a single grape from a single site â so think of this as the house speaking in full sentences: orchard fruit and a gentle pastry warmth from Meunier, lifted and tightened by Chardonnay. The wine passes through well-seasoned barrels and the dosage is kept low, which leaves it dry and clear-eyed rather than plush. The whole estate turns out only around 50,000 bottles a year, so this is small-grower Champagne in the truest sense.
